Aalborg Kongres & Kultur Center is certified in accordance with both the international standard for sustainable events, ISO 20121, as well as the DNV-GL’s Sustainable Development Goals.
As part of an increased focus on sustainability in AKKC, the house has chosen to develop even further on the existing certified work with sustainability. This development happened by achieving DNV-GL’s certificate on Sustainable Development Goals.
Thus, by August 2020, AKKC became the first officially SDG-certified event place in Denmark.
The certification consists of a specific list of Sustainable Development Goals and targets, from which AKKC wants to contribute to. AKKC has chosen to work with the following SDGs:
In 2017, AKKC was awarded certification in accordance with the ISO 20121 international standard for sustainable event management – as the first and only event venue in Denmark.
ISO 20121 is based on – and is a further development of – former British standard BS 8901, which is aimed at sustainability in the event industry. Certification means that we have now committed ourselves to implementing a systematic approach to sustainability and ensuring continuous improvement of our sustainability performance.
At the same time, we have undertaken to ensure that an annual review of our system is conducted by an independent and objective third party that will ensure that we continue to comply with the requirements of the ISO 20121 standard for management systems for sustainable events.
The decision to apply for certification was taken for several reasons. First of all, we wanted to ensure that sustainability considerations were incorporated into our daily routines in a natural manner. We were also looking to implement a value-creative aspect, which of course requires that existing processes and sustainable initiatives that are launched are the subject of critical reflection. Such a system comes naturally through a certified management system. We also wish to ensure that our customers and guests can hold events and visit us with an easy conscience. Furthermore, we see sustainability as an absolutely essential part of our existence as a business, as today it is becoming increasingly important to take responsibility and promote involvement in sustainability work.
Being awarded certification in accordance with ISO 20121 has certainly kick-started AKKC’s sustainable profile, and we are continuing our efforts to fulfil our goal of making a real difference in Aalborg, Denmark and Scandinavia as The Sustainable Event Venue of The North.
