Internationally certified according to ISO 20121

In the fall of 2017, AKKC was certified according to the international standard ISO 20121 for sustainable events – as the first event venue in Denmark.

ISO 20121 originates from and is developed from the former British standard BS 8901, which is aimed at sustainability work in the event industry. The certification means that we are committed to systematizing our approach to sustainability and ensuring continuous improvement of our sustainability performance.

Simultaneously we commit to annual reviews of our system by an independent, objective third party to ensure that we continue to meet the requirements of the ISO 20121 standard for management systems for sustainable events.

We chose to become certified for several reasons. Firstly, we wanted to ensure that sustainable considerations were integrated as a natural part of our daily work.

We also wanted it to be value-creating work, which of course requires critical reflection on existing processes and the sustainable initiatives we implement. A system you naturally get with a certified management system.

We also want to ensure that our customers and guests can put on events with us and visit us with a clear conscience. Additionally, we see it as an essential part of being able to exist as a business because it is so important today to take responsibility and participate in sustainable work.

Being certified according to ISO 20121 has truly kickstarted AKKC’s responsible profile, and we continue to work hard towards making a difference for Aalborg, Denmark, and the Nordic countries.

Nordic Swan Ecolabel Certification

In June 2025, AKKC reached yet another milestone in our sustainability efforts. We are very proud to now be certified with the Nordic Swan Ecolabel for meetings and conferences – as the first venue in North Jutland without overnight accommodation to achieve this certification.

Being Nordic Swan Ecolabel certified means that, as a conference center, we work in a structured and proactive way to reduce our resource consumption and optimize our operations. Furthermore, we can document that we meet strict environmental requirements related to energy, water, food, waste, chemicals, and procurement.

The Nordic Swan Ecolabel is a well-known and highly respected environmental certification, endorsing AKKC as a more environmentally and climate-friendly choice for hosting meetings and conferences.

In addition, the Nordic Swan Ecolabel enjoys strong public recognition, and the certification helps us demonstrate to our many visitors that we take responsibility and lead the way in advancing sustainability.

An entire sustainability department

At AKKC, we work so focused on sustainability that we have an entire sustainability department with four dedicated employees, and in 2023, AKKC won the award called “Årets Bæredygtighedspris” (Sustainability Award of the Year) at the Aalborg Awards for our extensive work whithin the area.

Opt for digital marketing solutions

At AKKC, you have plenty of opportunities to use digital solutions instead of, for example, banners. A PVC banner of 3 m² emits 6.9 kg CO2e, whereas a marketing screen that is on for 10 hours emits 0.6 kg CO2.

Use public transportation

Reduce CO2 emissions from your transportation by taking the train or other public transportations to AKKC. Aalborg station is only a 5-minute walk from AKKC. If you arrive by car, we recommend utilizing all the car seats.

Choose the right accommodation

When choosing accommodation in Aalborg, there are several parameters to consider if you want to take responsibility. We recommend, among other things, choosing an accommodation with a collective agreement and an eco-label.
